AG: Check Toy Recall List During Holidays

December 21, 2009

Jackson, Miss. - The Christmas holiday is a great time for parents to double-check the safety of the toys their children are playing with, reminds Attorney General Jim Hood.

"The seemingly endless list of recalled products on the consumer product safety commission's Website is proof that even the best of companies sometimes release less than safe products into the market stream," said Hood. "That's why parents must take it upon themselves to check out the toys their children are playing with."

The best resource for parents to check to see if the toys their children are playing with have been recalled is the Website of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC recall list can be found at www.agjimhood.com .

"We are doing everything in our power to strengthen laws in this area to protect our kids," said Hood. "In fact, in January we will be re-introducing a bill called the 'Children's Product Safety Act'."

The bill protects children from dangerous and unsafe toys and other children's products that have been recalled. The bill was introduced in 2008 and passed the legislature overwhelmingly, but was vetoed by Gov. Haley Barbour.

If passed, the bill would require the attorney general to, on his Website, keep a list of unsafe toys that have been recalled by the federal government or the product's manufacturer. Additionally, sellers would be prohibited from selling dangerous and recalled children's products.

"Some of the 9 million products recalled by Mattell in recent years contained 110,000 parts per million (ppm) of lead even though the federal maximum is 600 ppm," said the attorney general. "This bill is designed to get the lead out of children's toys. We've taken good steps in this area, but we need the law to really see change."

Mississippians are encouraged to contact their lawmakers and ask them to support this legislation.

Twins Left Without Oldest New Mom

Lots of Americans have weighed in on the issue of age-limits for older women, mostly those who have passed menopause, becoming new mothers now that the oldest new mother known to Americans has died.

news.aol.com

Maria del Carmen Bousada of Spain was 69 when she died earlier this week, about three years after she gave birth to twin boys in December 2006. She received donated eggs, sperm and in-vitro fertilization.

(Though she is listed in the Guiness Record as the oldest new mother on record, there have been women who were older, as mentioned in an earlier post at itsyourbirthdaybabies. )

Media reports said Bousada told personnel at Pacific Fertility Center in Los Angeles that she was 55 years old, though she was 66 at the time, to receive fertility treatment. Fifty-five is the cutoff age for IVF treatment in the U.S.

Debate has raged since about older women, new motherhood, and help from fertility clinics.

Bousada's sons are two-year-olds. She believed she would live long enough to raise the children.

66-Year-Old British Woman to Give Birth

In about a month, Elizabeth Adeney of England will become a first-time mother, among the oldest new mothers in the world, according to abcnews.com.

Adeney, a career woman in good health, is not the oldest woman known worldwide to have given birth. That title is held by 70-year-old Omkari Panwar of India, who delivered twins in 2008. Both pregnancies were the result of in vitro fertilization.

The oldest American woman had been Aleta James of New York, who had twins at age 57 in 2004. But since then there have been several news reports of women in their late 50's, and a few in their early 60's, acting as surrogates for their daughters.

Still, Sarah of biblical history has all of them beat, having given birth at age 90, though she probably was closer to 91 years old, "according to the time of life" mentioned in Genesis 18 and 21 chapters.

According to abcnews.com, there is ongoing debate among medical experts and the public about the wisdom of such births in older women, usually by IVF. Some people believe having a baby at that age is the height of selfishness, while others think it's a miracle, or it's the woman's own business.

Some say it's not something that need cause controversy since there is no mad rush by hordes of senior women to give birth. There has been a trend among American middle-aged women, as demonstrated by several American actresses, to delay childbirth until their 40's.

Ironically, older women having children was something that was not uncommon in the United States until about 50 years ago, possibly when the birth control pill became popular.

Whether they agree or not, medical experts do say that the older a woman is the greater the risks of complications with both baby and mother, including high blood pressure, diabetes, pre-term labor in the mother and Down Syndrome in the child. Most IVF clinics in the U.S. and Britain do not provide treatment for women over 50 years old. Adeney went to the Ukraine for her treatments, according to abcnews.com.

WHAT YOU YOU THINK?

Do you know of any middle-age or older women who have given birth? Do you have a family history of relatives having children long past today's standard of the ideal childbearing age?

Amazing 8, But Public Tired of Mother Suleman

Since the birth Jan. 26 of octuplets to California mother Nadya Suleman, broadcast and print media have been filled with news of the babies and their family. The stories have played out like a bad soap opera -- only it's so very real -- and seem to get more bizarre as the days go by.

February was full of information about the amazing feat of what this 33-year-old woman has done in terms of an enomously dangerous and stressful pregnancy ... and her family life.

ItsYourBirthdayBabies has posted a few of these stories, but for the most part we have left it to media outlets to give Americans and the world the daily fill of news. Our purpose is to celebrate the womanly feat of childbirth and new lives brought into the world.

Regardless of public opinion now, the fact that this woman carried eight children for nine months and is still alive and well enough to discuss it is absolutely amazing.

This is an obstetrical feat that is totally unique and has been repeated only three times in the world that we know of at this date. The octuplets in California are the only ones who have survived without a loss of any of the children.

Of the only other set of octuplets born in the U.S. one of the babies died. The six remaining children born in 1998 to mother Nkem Chukwu and husband Iyke Louis Udobi in Texas are now 10 years old. The parents also had another child in 2002.

We admit that at first the American public was fascinated at this amazing pregnancy. Who was the mother? Why so many?. How could it happen?

However, as information about the mother and her family situation was revealed the joy and wonder that people had about the births turned to intense criticism about the woman's mental state and financial ability to care for eight newborns.

(There are six boys and two girls -- Josiah, Makai, Jeremiah, Nariyah, Jonah, Noah, Maliyah and Isaiah. All share the middle name Angel.)

The first hints of disapproval began after the public learned that Suleman already had six children, all under age 7, including two with autism. Public opinion really turned nasty, and downright dangerous, after people learned that she is receiving public assistance.

Her first publicist quit after receiving numerous threats.

Surprise. All 14 children were conceived by in vitro fertilization. All crowded into a three-bedroom house in an area where neighbors are split between support and complaints.

There is an overworked and disgruntled grandmother -- Angela Suleman -- who is fed up with her daughter's numerous pregnancies. Grandfather Ed Doud is supportive, but whom we first heard would return to his native Iraq to find work to support all 14 of his grandchildren.

He, his wife and daughter have become media stars -- if that's the right word. (They have appeared on NBC, RadarOnline, TMZ, Oprah, Dr. Phil, ABC, Inside Edition, and on and on.)

Nadya Suleman, who is divorced, turns out to be a mother unable to provide for her own care and that of her previous children and the eight newborns. She appears to be an unstable mother who had help from a questionable doctor with her obsession for numerous children. It seems she's an only child trying to make up for her lack of siblings during a lonely childhood.

She told Ann Curry of NBC, "That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family."

The medical community that was so awed is now up in arms, calling for medical malpractice against the fertility doctor in question -- Dr. Michael Kamrava. Rumors and some factual information indicate that officials at Bellflower Medical Center are threatening to prevent Suleman from taking the eight babies home without assurance of their proper care.

The world wondered about the father.

A boyfriend of three years who now has two sons of his own wants to know if the newborns are his children. Nadya Suleman says no, but the potential father wants a DNA test to make sure. He doesn't trust his former girlfriend, but he plans to help no matter the paternity results, according to abcnews.com.

Suleman's former husband, Marcos Gutierrez, told Inside Edition March 4 that the children are not his, but that his ex-wife is  "a great person with a great heart."

By now we've all heard the police audio tapes of her calls to 911 when one of her older children went missing, apparently following his grandmother around the neighborhood.

Several times Nadya Suleman threatened to kill herself. The words did not help her negative public image.

According to aol.com on March 9, the second publist -- Victor Munoz -- resigned, saying Suleman "is nuts" and greedy.

An aol.com survey on March 9 showed that 89 percent of Americans are tired of hearing about the mother-- dubbed 'Octomom' -- and her family issues. It's a case of "if I never again hear the name Nadya Suleman it will be too soon."

Still, Suleman's father, ex-boyfriend, medical personnel and some commentators are correct. Her babies are going to need help, regardless of what anyone thinks about their mother.

8 Babies May Be More Than Enough, Too Many

The mother of the octuplets born Jan. 26 in Bellflower, Calif., has come under increasing criticism since the public learned that she is a 33-year-old single woman who already has six children.

According to abcnews.com Mike Von Fremd, she lives with her parents in a modest home surrounded by neighbors who are split in their opinion about the birth of the six boys and two girls.

An 87-year old neighbor said it doesn't make sense to her with the economy the way it is. Others said the young mother takes care of her children and is excited about the new ones.

The woman's father, who is a native of Iraq, has said he would return to his country to continue with a contracting job to support his grandchildren, who now total 14. His daughter is an only child.

Medical ethicists and the public are questioning the decision of doctors who implanted so many embryos into such a young woman, who took fertility drugs. With six children already under age 7, including twins, people wonder why she needed the drugs at all.

In media articles and broadcasts, the woman's parents have said their daughter only intended to have one more child, but she chose not to have selective reduction (abortion) of any of the babies.

"They all happended to take,"  Angela Suleman told the Los Angeles Times.

The experts and the public are also questioning the wisdom of a single mother and family with financial problems purposely giving birth to so many children who will most likely have medical problems well into childhood and perhaps adulthood.

Born at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower, Calif., they arrived nine weeks premature. Only one, so far, needs help with breathing.

Dr. Mandhir Gupta and other physicians at the hospital, excited about the births, have held news conferences to report that the children and mother are doing well.

"My family and I are estatic about all their arrivals," the mother said in a statement read by Dr. Karen Maples.

8 Babies Born to California Mother

One was hiding behind the mother's spleen, but joined seven, count'em, SEVEN brothers and sisters when a California woman gave birth to the only other set of surviving octuplets ever born in the U.S. and the world.

Media reports said the six boys and two girls were born within five minutes Jan. 26 at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital, starting at 10:43 a.m. The mother has asked not to be identified.

Nkem Chukwu of Texas, at age 27 in December 1998,  gave birth to the first set of live-born octuplets.  One girl was born early and the other siblings were given another two weeks in their mother's womb to improve their changes of survival. One baby died a week later.

She and her husband, Ike, live in Houston with the remaining children, who turned 10 in December 2008.

According to CNN.com by 1998, nine babies were the highest known multiple birth, which occurred during 1971 in Sydney, Australia. Three of the children died at birth.

Octuplets have been born in Britain, Turkey and Spain, but not all survived during birth.

In recent days fertility experts have been critical of the births, citing health risks to the mother and babies, and financial burden to the family, according to abcnews. com. As well, ABC reporter Mike Von Fremnd has said the mother of the octuplets already may be a single mother of six.
